The Basket Child  Cinsault

It is believed that old vineyards are very similar to old people. Most of them have found peace in themselves – it is our mission to show the world the elegance such inner found peace can produce.  The grapes used for this wine are harvested from a block of old bush vine Cinsault planted to decomposed granite in 1972 on our Bottelary property. It is unirrigated and like a camel – it can go through a whole summer without water.

The Basket Child Cinsault

A unique winemaking technique, incorporating gentle basket pressing in the production of the "Basket Child," results in an exceptionally aromatic rendition of a staple in the South African red wine scene. This wine exhibits a paradoxical nature, being simultaneously dense yet light, ripe yet refreshingly fresh.

This basket-pressed Cinsault wine presents an intriguing medley of flavors. On the nose, it offers a bouquet of red berries, violets, and subtle hints of spice. The palate is a harmonious blend of ripe raspberry and cherry notes, framed by gentle tannins that provide a velvety texture. It maintains a refreshing acidity that balances the wine's fruitiness, leading to a long, elegant finish.

Pair this Cinsault with grilled lamb chops marinated in rosemary and garlic for a delightful combination of flavors. Its vibrant fruitiness complements the savory notes of the lamb, while the wine's gentle tannins match the meat's richness. Alternatively, try it with a hearty ratatouille or a mushroom risotto to accentuate its versatile character and enhance the overall dining experience.
